The Red Dress Party began in 2001 in Portland, Oregon, created by a gay male couple who kept a promise to wear red dresses at their funerals to draw attention and support to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Regardless of the city or whether it takes the form of an indoor dance party or an outdoor fun run, attendees of all genders wear red dresses as a symbol of unity, visibility, and solidarity, raising money for local charities and HIV/AIDS advocacy over the decades.
The Red Dress Party has grown into an incredible tradition of activism, turning a poignant personal promise into a vibrant, nationwide symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness, solidarity, and fundraising. By defying traditional gender norms through the mandatory red dress dress code, it creates a visually striking statement of unity while providing vital financial support to local LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS advocacy organizations.
